# Amazon raised Echo and Kindle prices by the same dollar amount, which tells you what changed

Both Echos went up $30. Both Kindles went up $40. In percentage terms that is 60 percent on an Echo Dot and 13.6 percent on an Echo Show, and the uniform dollar figure is the more informative number.

Amazon has raised the price of its own hardware, and said why. The company is ["facing significant increases in memory and storage component costs. After absorbing these increases for as long as we could, we recently adjusted pricing across our product lines."](https://fortune.com/2026/08/24/apple-lays-off-staffers-ahead-of-ceo-change/)

The Echo Dot goes from $49.99 to $79.99. The Echo Show 11 goes from $219.99 to $249.99. The base 16GB Kindle goes from $109.99 to $149.99, and the 16GB Kindle Paperwhite from $159.99 to $199.99.

## Read the dollars before the percentages

The percentage increases are 60 percent, 13.6 percent, 36.4 percent and 25 percent respectively, and the 60 percent will be the number that travels.

The more useful observation is that both Echo devices went up by exactly $30 and both Kindles by exactly $40. Within each product family the increase is a flat amount rather than a proportion.

That pattern is what a component cost pass-through looks like. If Amazon were repricing for margin or for demand, you would expect percentage moves, because that is how you protect a margin. A fixed dollar increase across devices at very different price points is consistent with a fixed dollar increase in what goes into them, applied once and passed on. The company's own explanation and the shape of the numbers agree, which is not always the case when a firm explains a price rise.

The corollary is arithmetic rather than commercial. The same $30 falls on a $49.99 device and a $219.99 device. On the cheap one it is 60 percent of the price; on the expensive one it is under 14 percent. Nothing about the Echo Dot has been singled out. It is simply the product with the least room.

## Why datacenters set the price of a smart speaker

Memory chips for a speaker and memory for an AI datacenter come out of broadly the same industry, and in the short run that industry's output is fixed. A new fabrication plant takes years and tens of billions of dollars, so within any given year the supply is what it is.

When supply cannot move, allocation decides who gets it, and allocation follows margin. Datacenter memory currently commands the highest prices in the industry, which is visible in the results of the companies making it: we reported yesterday that [SK Hynix posted a 76 percent operating margin](/sk-hynix-raised-26-5-billion-dollars-in-july-and-is-spending-29-billion-buying-i) on second-quarter revenue up 257 percent. A manufacturer with a fixed number of wafers and a customer paying those prices does not send them to a $50 speaker.

Consumer hardware is therefore not competing on the merits of its own demand. It is bidding for what is left.

## This is the fourth or fifth instance, not the first

The pattern has been running for months and Amazon is a late entrant rather than an outlier. Nvidia has raised prices [more than 15 percent for the same reason](/nvidia-is-raising-prices-more-than-15-percent-and-the-reason-is-memory). The squeeze now runs from the accelerator at one end of the market to the e-reader at the other.

## The inflation framing, carefully

This is a relative price moving because an input is scarce, not a general price level moving because of demand or money. Those are different things and they call for different responses, which is why the distinction matters beyond pedantry.

Whether it shows up in official inflation statistics depends on the weight consumer electronics carry in the index and on how the statistical agencies adjust for changes in specification, which is its own methodological problem when a device gets cheaper by getting less capable. We have no source on either point and are not going to guess.

What can be said is narrower. A household buying a smart speaker this month pays 60 percent more than it would have, and the reason is a decision made in a semiconductor allocation meeting about a completely different customer.
