# China is banning hidden door handles, and Tesla is recalling 3 million cars to comply

Eleven carmakers are recalling vehicles in China over flush electronic door handles that can leave occupants unable to get out after a crash or a fire. Tesla's share is close to 3 million cars, the largest single piece of it. China is banning the design outright from 2027, and a US investigation into Tesla's handles has been open since late last year.

Xiaomi, Xpeng and the Geely brands Zeekr and Lynk & Co are also involved.

The recall is unusual in that the defect is not a component that fails. It is a design that works exactly as intended, and the objection is to what it does in the situations where a door matters most.

## What the problem is

Flush handles sit level with the bodywork and present themselves electrically when the car is unlocked. They look clean, they cut drag slightly, and they have become standard on electric vehicles. They also depend on power and on electronics.

After a serious crash, or in a fire, either can be gone. Every such car therefore has a mechanical release inside, but on many models it is not obvious: tucked into a door pocket, hidden under a panel, or described only in the manual. A passenger who has never needed it, or a bystander trying to open the door from outside, may not find it at all.

The remedy reflects that. [Nine of the eleven manufacturers will fit labels showing occupants where the emergency release is](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/21/tesla-recalls-3-million-cars-as-part-of-china-wide-push-to-stop-hidden-door-handles/), and all eleven will push a software update. Tesla is separately redesigning its handles for future vehicles.

## Why it costs less than the number suggests

A recall of three million cars sounds like an enormous liability, and in this case it is mostly not.

The cost of a recall is set by the remedy, not the vehicle count. A software update is delivered over the air at nearly zero marginal cost, which is one of the genuine advantages of a connected fleet. Adding a label is a low cost per car, though not zero: it means service capacity, scheduling and, on this scale, a real logistical exercise.

The expensive version would be replacing the handle mechanism on three million cars, and that is not what has been ordered. The redesign applies going forward.

## The rule behind it

The recall is a step towards a rule rather than an isolated enforcement action. China announced in February that it would [ban hidden, electrically operated exterior door handles from 2027](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/21/tesla-recalls-3-million-cars-as-part-of-china-wide-push-to-stop-hidden-door-handles/), and draft requirements would oblige manual releases to be, in the words of one legislative proposal, intuitive to use and readily accessible to the occupant.

That is a design mandate, and it is worth noting which way it runs. For most of the past two decades, Chinese vehicle safety rules followed European and American standards. Here China is setting a requirement first, and doing it in the market that builds most of the world's electric vehicles, which means the design change propagates globally whether or not other regulators follow.

They may follow anyway. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [opened an investigation into Tesla's door system in late 2025](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/21/tesla-recalls-3-million-cars-as-part-of-china-wide-push-to-stop-hidden-door-handles/), after reports of occupants unable to open doors, and that investigation remains open. Similar concerns have been raised about Rivian and Ford vehicles, and a bill before Congress would require manual releases to meet an accessibility standard.

## The context that is not in the recall notice

China is Tesla's second-largest market and the source of a large share of its production, and it is also where its competitive position has weakened most, against domestic manufacturers who now match it on software and undercut it on price. Being the largest name in an eleven-company recall is not, on its own, a competitive setback: the point of an industry-wide action is that everyone is in it.

What the episode does illustrate is a specific hazard of the connected car. When the fix is a software update, compliance is cheap and fast. When the underlying issue is physical, software can only tell you where the handle is.
