# Morgan Stanley Posts Record Quarter as Trading Revenue Surges

Morgan Stanley reported record second-quarter revenue of $21.3 billion and net income of $5.6 billion, or $3.46 a share, well ahead of forecasts, as a 69% jump in stock-trading revenue powered the results. It caps an unusually strong earnings season for the big US banks.

Morgan Stanley delivered a record quarter, the latest big US bank to be lifted by a boom on its trading desks. The firm reported net revenue of $21.3 billion for the second quarter, up from $16.8 billion a year earlier, and net income of $5.6 billion, or $3.46 per diluted share, [according to figures from its earnings release reported by Quartz](https://qz.com/morgan-stanley-record-revenue-profit-stock-trading-071526). That comfortably beat Wall Street forecasts, which had centered on about $2.94 a share and $19.64 billion in revenue.

## The trading engine

The standout was stock trading. [Equities-trading revenue jumped about 69% from a year earlier to $6.3 billion, far above the roughly $4.4 billion analysts had expected, per the results reported by Quartz](https://qz.com/morgan-stanley-record-revenue-profit-stock-trading-071526). That single line did much of the work in turning a good quarter into a record one.

The reason trading desks did so well is, in a word, volatility. When prices swing sharply and clients trade more often, a big bank that sits in the middle of those flows, buying and selling for customers, earns more on the increased volume and wider spreads between buy and sell prices. This quarter's turbulence, driven in part by geopolitics and shifting expectations for interest rates, was good for that business even as it unsettled investors.

## The two sides of Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley runs on two main engines. One is wealth management, advising well-off clients and managing their money, a steadier, fee-based business that Morgan Stanley has leaned into over the past decade to smooth out its results. The other is institutional securities, which houses the trading and investment-banking operations that can swing hard with markets. The blend is deliberate: the wealth arm provides ballast, while trading and dealmaking supply the upside in quarters like this one.

## Part of a strong bank season

Morgan Stanley's numbers fit a clear pattern this earnings season. The largest US banks reported bumper results a day earlier, with several posting record trading revenue as the same volatile markets lifted their desks; Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase both reported standout quarters. The common thread was capital markets, active trading and a revival in dealmaking, rather than the plodding business of lending.

That is worth keeping in mind when reading a headline like this one. Trading is the most cyclical part of banking: it can surge when markets are choppy and fade just as quickly when they calm. A record quarter built substantially on trading is a genuine strength, but it is not the same as a durable, repeatable stream of profit. For now, though, Morgan Stanley has ridden the turbulence to one of its best three-month stretches on record, and Boursel will watch whether the momentum holds as the trading environment shifts.
