# Novo Nordisk Puts Its Wegovy Weight-Loss Pill on UK Pharmacy Shelves

Novo Nordisk's Wegovy weight-loss pill, an oral form of semaglutide, went on sale in UK high-street and online pharmacies this week, priced from roughly £99 to £249 a month and available only on private prescription. The launch is the Danish drugmaker's bid to win back ground from Eli Lilly in the fast-growing market for obesity medicines.

The weight-loss drug that has reshaped the pharmaceutical industry is now available in Britain as a tablet. Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill, an oral version of the medicine known chemically as semaglutide, went on sale this week in UK high-street and online pharmacies, [The Guardian reported](https://www.theguardian.com/science/2026/jul/06/wegovy-weight-loss-pill-on-sale-uk-high-street-online-pharmacies). Britain's medicines regulator, the MHRA, cleared the tablet on June 11, and pharmacies began dispensing it in early July.

## What is on sale, and at what price

Until now, semaglutide for weight loss has mostly meant a weekly self-injection. The new product delivers the same drug in a once-daily pill, removing the needle that deters some patients. Pricing is set by each pharmacy on top of what Novo charges, and it varies widely: monthly costs run from around £99 for starting doses to roughly £249 for the full strength, with some online clinics advertising lower headline prices on longer commitments.

Crucially, the pill is a private purchase. It is not available on the National Health Service, where injectable Wegovy is tightly rationed, and analysts do not expect NHS access before 2027 at the earliest, pending a cost-effectiveness review by the health-spending watchdog NICE. For now, the tablet reaches only those willing to pay out of pocket or through private clinics and employers that cover obesity treatment.

## Why Novo needs the win

The launch matters commercially because Novo Nordisk has been losing ground. The company effectively created the modern obesity-drug market with semaglutide, sold as Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for weight loss, but its US rival Eli Lilly has taken share with tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro and Zepbound, which has produced greater average weight loss in trials.

An oral option is one way Novo can widen its reach. A pill is easier to start, simpler to distribute and appeals to patients uneasy about injections, potentially expanding the pool of customers beyond those the weekly shot can attract. Novo has framed the tablet's pricing as a deliberate attempt to find a competitive middle ground rather than a premium product.

## The competitive backdrop

The move also comes as the race shifts toward pills. Eli Lilly has its own oral drug, Foundayo (orforglipron), which US regulators approved in April and which, unlike the Wegovy tablet, [can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions](https://investor.lilly.com/news-releases/news-release-details/foundayotm-orforglipron-lillys-new-oral-glp-1-pill-weight-loss). The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach, a modest inconvenience that could matter as the two companies compete on convenience as well as efficacy.

For a global audience, the UK launch is a small but telling episode in a much larger contest. The obesity-drug market is one of the biggest growth stories in health care, and both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are pouring capital into manufacturing and new formulations to serve it. Getting a pill onto pharmacy shelves, in a major market, ahead of full NHS coverage is less about immediate British sales than about staking out position in the shift from injections to tablets, the next front in the weight-loss wars.
