# Zcash hit an eight-year high, and Grayscale filed to turn its trust into an ETF

ZEC reached $841 on Friday and a fresh eight-year high on Monday, up 66 percent on the week. Grayscale has asked the SEC to convert its Zcash Trust into an exchange traded fund under the ticker ZCSH.

Zcash [reached $841 on Friday and set an eight-year high on Monday, up 66 percent over the week](https://fortune.com/2026/08/24/zcash-eight-year-high-crypto-rally-etf-approval/). Grayscale filed an amendment with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday to convert its existing Zcash Trust into an exchange traded fund, with the proposed ticker ZCSH, intended for the New York Stock Exchange.

## What the filing is and is not

A conversion amendment is a request. It is not an approval, and the distinction has cost people money before.

Grayscale already runs a Zcash Trust, a closed-end vehicle whose shares can trade at a substantial premium or discount to the value of the coins it holds. Converting it to an ETF would introduce the creation and redemption mechanism that keeps an ETF's price tied to its assets, which is precisely why holders of such trusts want conversion: it closes the discount.

That is a real economic event for existing trust holders if it happens. It is a filing until then, and the SEC has taken its time with this category before.

## Our earlier reading, tested

We covered this move on 22 August, when [ZEC was near $819 and we said the futures market was doing the buying](/zcash-has-tripled-since-june-on-a-grayscale-filing-and-the-futures-market-is-doi). The figure we led on was the ratio of futures volume to spot: about $9.5 billion against $1.06 billion in 24 hours, roughly nine to one.

Two days later the price is higher rather than lower, which is not a refutation. A derivatives-led move can run a long way before it reverses, and saying that leverage is doing the buying is a statement about the composition of demand, not a forecast of the direction.

What would change the reading is the ratio itself. If spot volume has risen toward futures volume, the buyer base has broadened and the move rests on firmer ground. We do not have an updated ratio and are not going to assume one.

The relevant caution stands either way: a position built with borrowed money unwinds faster than one built with cash, and the same mechanism that produced 66 percent in a week is capable of producing a comparable number in the other direction.

## The privacy question underneath

Zcash is a privacy coin. Transactions can be shielded so that sender, recipient and amount are not visible on the public ledger, which is the feature that distinguishes it from bitcoin and the reason one cryptographer quoted in the reporting says "many are calling it 'perfect Bitcoin'".

That description is a technical compliment and a regulatory problem in the same sentence. The property that makes a privacy coin appealing to people who think financial surveillance has gone too far is the same property that makes exchanges and regulators in several jurisdictions treat it as high risk. Some venues have delisted privacy assets rather than build the compliance apparatus.

An ETF is a regulated wrapper around exactly that asset, offered to ordinary brokerage accounts. Whether the SEC is comfortable with the combination is the substantive question in the filing, and it is a different question from whether a spot bitcoin ETF should exist, which is the precedent people will reach for.

## Context on the rest of the market

Bitcoin was trading just below $80,000 on Monday, and the wider market has had a strong week, which we covered separately in [the gap between what crypto ETFs are worth and what people actually bought](/crypto-etfs-grew-23-billion-dollars-last-week-and-only-2-6-billion-of-it-was-new).

A 66 percent week in a single asset during a broad rally is partly the rally and partly the asset. Separating the two requires a longer run of data than one week provides.
