What a trade deficit actually measures, and what it does not
- The US goods and services deficit was $77.6 billion in May 2026, a 42% jump in one month.
- Year to date it is down 40.6% against 2025.
- Both numbers are correct, which is the first clue that the trade balance is a harder statistic to read than headlines suggest.
