EU Accuses Instagram and Facebook of Addictive Design, Threatening Big Fines

  • The European Commission has issued preliminary findings that Meta's Facebook and Instagram breach EU rules by using design features, such as endless scrolling and autoplay, that it says encourage compulsive use, especially among minors.
  • These are provisional charges, not a final ruling, but if they stand Meta could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual revenue.
