The grid battery problem: lithium-ion is cheap, but only for a few hours
- Battery storage is being built at record pace, with 108 GW added worldwide in 2025 and pack prices at an all-time low of $108 per kilowatt-hour.
- Almost all of it discharges over about two hours.
- The chemistry that made short-duration storage cheap does not scale economically to the multi-day storage a renewables-heavy grid needs.
